What is a pistachio nut?

Pistachios are domestically grown in the united states, but originated in iran, turkey, syria, greece, and italy. Ninety-eight percent of all pistachios are grown in the united states are grown in california. These nuts are grown on trees. The shells are tan and the kernels inside are a greenish color which comes from chlorophyll. They are sold with partly open shells that occur for the duration of the growth procedure. The kernels are peeking out, making it easy to open the shell to extract the nut. Immature kernels never pop the shell and are discarded by growers for commercial sale.
